Arc welders use welding rods and are usually put to work welding thicker pieces of steel.  The welding rod is actually struck on the object to be welded and the arc thus melts both the metal object and the welding rod.  As the welder moves the welding rod along the designated area to be welded, a very solid, strong welding bond is formed.
