Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In this process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join beams when constructing buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, power plants, and refineries.

There are many different types and sizes of welders available on the market today.  For example, an arc welder creates a very hot point of energy by using an electric arc. This heat produced by this arc melts the metals, binding them together at the point of contact. The most common types of arc welders available are metal inert gas welders, or MIG welders, and tungsten inert gas welders, or TIG welders.

A MIG welder utilizes a wire feeding mechanism that feeds a wire electrode into the weld joint automatically. At the same time this is accomplished, a shielding gas is released to protect the weld from the oxidizing effects of oxygen. A TIG welder has a tungsten electrode which the arc is actually created from, primarily because tungsten is such a hard metal, it is not melted, so a filler metal is hand fed into the welding pool.
